About this Piece
This was originally a `bird`s eye` map published in 1849, that was divided into three strip maps that covers the River Thames from Eton to the Nore. The map identifies the towns that line the shores and notes each of the bridges that crosses it. A multitude of boats and masted ships traverse the water and it was first found in the Illustrated London News. It was originally intended as a guide for excursionists and includes landmarks and places of interest. The first known version which was a wood-cut, dates from 1844. Eton is a town in Berkshire, very close to Windsor and the Nore is a sandbank at the mouth of the Thames Estuary, which marks the point where the River Thames meets the North Sea.
